Sooty came to live with me a long, long time ago when I was eight or nine years old and longing to have a kitty of my own. She was a jet-black moggie (hence the name - in my day eight-year-olds didn't have much imagination), skinny and very long suffering when it came to being dressed up and bundled into a doll's pram! Well, she put up with it for a couple of minutes or so until she decided that she'd better re-establish the dignity any self-respecting cat should show.
Her outstanding characteristic became evident the first time that she had to visit the vet's. Once put in the basket, she didn't miaow in protest... she YODELLED!!!! There's no other word for it.... on and on and on she would go. People would stop and turn their heads as we drove along the street, unable to identify the strange noise!

Unfortunately she got to know the vet's very well as she had an unidentified illness for several months and had exploratory surgery and a two week visit to the Veterinary College at Edinburgh University. Nobody ever found out what was really wrong with her but eventually she got better on her own.

We moved from Scotland to the south of England and she was shipped down by train. When we arrived at the station to collect her, as soon as we had entered we could hear the yodelling... Sooty had arrived at her new home!
